This 2‐session course will provide teachers of mathematics with a deeper understanding of the
literacy demands of mathematics.
Following a general overview of best practice in teaching literacy, participants will explore a variety of strategies that can be used in their lessons to help strengthen student literacy. These strategies will build student capacity to understand problems, engage more effectively in working mathematically and explain their reasoning.
Using prepared activities, teachers will be led through various types of literacy tasks. These tasks will involve both individual and group work and include sequencing, cloze, scaffolding, structured overviews, barrier games, models and joint constructions of explanations, descriptions, procedures, information reports and simple, compound and complex sentences.
